The Dominican Montecristo cigar is a rendition of the famous medium to full-bodied, premium cigar produced in Cuba since 1935. After 1995, premium Montecristo cigars have been handmade by Cuban exiles in Dominican Republic, wrapped in golden Connecticut Shade and distributed by the United States.
Named after the famous novel, written by Alexandre Dumas in 1844, "The Count of Monte Cristo", this cigar uses what Cubans called "Cohiba", tobacco, which has been celebrated for its medicinal properties. Cigar connoisseurs have lamented the American blockade of Cuba. Dominicans have profited by mixing Cuban tobacco with other blends to mimic cigar favorites. Rumors are that Cuban exiles have transplanted Cuban tobacco for growth in Dominican Republic soil. The Dominican Montecristo cigar is gaining accolades for its sweet aroma, smooth, creamy taste and great construction - mirroring what some have called the world's most famous cigar trademark.
