In 2005, the La Aurora 1495 debuted just a year after the rare, but already famous 100 Años was released celebrating La Aurora’s 100th anniversary. The 100 Años is a hard act to follow, but the 1495 took that challenge with gusto aiming to be a premium everyday cigar. This blend was created in commemoration of the year when Christopher Columbus made landfall on the Dominican Republic and discovered the natives smoking primitive cigars they called “Cao.”
The 1495 is a complex beast, sporting many types of hand-picked tobacco. It was one of the first cigars to use four different kinds of tobacco: Peruvian, Dominican piloto cubano, Nicaraguan, and Dominican Ligero filler. Bound in rare Dominican Corojo, the 1495 is polished with a high-quality Ecuadoran Sumatra Sun Grown wrapper. Needless to say, this fine cigar was an instant hit with the everyday cigar aficionados.
This cigar is balanced and full-bodied, best enjoyed after meals with substance, in particular a meal with meat. And is perfect to smoke aside a nice scotch or fine wine. One of the interesting effects of the multiple tobaccos is the constantly rotating flavors and aromas. From deep earth to rich leather, spicy pepper to hints of nut and back. During the entire experience, wood and creamy coffee tones will be in the background giving the smoke a solid platform against the rapidly changing tastes.
The well-balanced smoke makes the 1495 a good cigar for beginners, with enough complexity to entice the old hats. This is sure to become a staple cigar for the end of a good day following a satisfying meal that needs just a touch of something special. |
