Joya de Nicaragua, or “Jewel of Nicaragua”, was one of the first premium cigar brands in Nicaragua in the 1970s. Political unrest forced the brand to be disbanded for decades. Today, the brand has returned and in style as one of the most popular cigar brands produced in Nicaragua. The Celebracion line was developed after the immensely popular Antaño line.
The two cigars are close cousins in a lot of respects. Both are pure cigars as the wrapper, binder, and filler are grown in Nicaragua. The main difference is that the Celebracion sports a mellower habano criollo wrapper unlike the Antaño dark leathery Maduro. The criollo wrapper balanced the heavy-hitting flavors of the potent Nicaraguan tobacco and gives a medium to full body experience. Perfect for those who don’t exactly want to light up the “punch in the face” Antaño. Even so, while being more forgiving than the Antaño, this cigar is better enjoyed following a meal or with a drink. Otherwise it might floor you!
The first draw rewards you with a chocolate flavor. Each draw afterward brings an increasing coffee taste into the smoke. The mixture might remind you of coffee-flavored hard candies. Throughout the cigar, there’s an overtone of wood and nut that weaves through the smoke, but never overpowers the other flavors. Towards the end, there is a build up of pepper, but nothing that can’t be handled.
If you’ve tried the Antaño and found it too powerful, or you just can’t commit to trying such a hard-hitting cigar, the mellower, but not mellow Celebracion should hit the spot for you. Not to mention these cigars are cheaper than their cousin. |
