Hoyo de Monterrey Dark Sumatra |

Red Auerbach led the Boston Celtics to seven NBA titles and nearly 1000 winning games. The Hoyo de Monterrey was his victory cigar. Coincidence? Speaking of legends, the Hoyo de Monterrey traces its ancestry back to Cuba, its brand mark registered in 1865. After Castro’s takeover, manufacturing moved to Honduras and production resumed under the craftsmanship of cigar master Estelo Padrón. The Hoyo de Monterrey Dark Sumatra was born in 2002, a baby sure, but remember its pedigree. This is a robusto cigar, wrapped in an extra dark, fermented Ecuadorian Sumatra broadleaf. The binder is Connecticut broadleaf. Inside you’ll find a rich international blend of Piloto Cubano leaf from the Dominican Republic as well as quality Honduran, Nicaraguan and Dominican filler tobaccos.
The Dark Sumatra is a beauty - firm, tight and strong, with a slight cedar scent. It feels somewhat oily in your hands. Take another sniff and you’ll detect the slight aroma of chocolate. Given the strong wrapper, you might expect an equally strong flavor. Instead, the Piloto Cubano provides a creamy, chocolate taste, an excellent contrast to the stronger, spicier flavors of the Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos. The burn is consistent and the oil in the wrapper reemerges in the musky smell of the smoke. This is a cigar is fine companionship to a glass of scotch or port. |
