Cuba Libre cigars are rolled by Nestor Plasencia, who fled Cuba as a young man when Fidel Castro expelled him and nationalized the family tobacco farms and cigar factories. Plasencia relocated to Nicaragua, where he has long since established himself as one of the top cigar makers in Central America. His plantations produce more Cuban-seed tobacco than any other grower in the world. The Plasencia family continues to produce cigars of extraordinary quality, and to sell premium tobacco to other cigar makers all around the world. Nestor Pasencia, Jr., is carrying on the family tradition in the tobacco business into the fifth generation.
Plasencia’s own cigar brands include the Nestor 747, the Nestor Reserve, the Connecticut Reserve, and the Plasencia Reserva Organica, billed as the world’s first 100 percent organic cigar. Nestor’s factories also roll cigars for other makers, among them MAXX by Alec Bradley and many Rocky Patel cigars. Cuba Libre, which means “Free Cuba!,” is a special cigar for Nestor Plasencia, and the task of creating it may have taken on new urgency when word got out that Castro was stepping aside in favor of his brother Raul. Despite his well-established roots in Nicaragua, Plasencia, like many of his compatriots, longs to return home to a free Cuba. A mix of Cuban seed long-fillers, the Cuba Libre cigar is wrapped in a slighty oily Corojo wrapper with a red, white, blue, and gold band. The tobacco is aged for 8 months before being rolled. The flavor is mild, medium in strength and spicy, with a sweet finish, and the cigar remains cool down to the end. Many smokers report they can smoke the cigar down to a nub without biting. Cuba Libre cigars come packed 20 to a nice cedar box. The Cuba Libre has been almost universally praised since its introduction. An added bonus is that due mainly to a lack of promotion, Nestor Plascenia’s cigars are as a rule under appreciated, and thus very reasonably priced. |
